A trebuchet launches projectiles using a counterweight and swinging arm, but its speed is limited by the distance its weight travels. Tom Stanton engineered a compact trebuchet with a carbon fiber arm and a tapered drum to store energy and release it when its weight drops. It builds up so much speed that its projectiles can break the sound barrier.
